A few words about the series: In the 1980s and 90s I developed a series that juxtaposed rigid geometric patterns against fluid patterns, mostly of spheres. I thought I was done with it but early in 2015 I felt the need to revisit the theme. I first created a set of 12 x 30" drawings on black paper but found myself faced once again with the main problem of drawing on black paper -- once framed the reflections from the glazing would ruin the look and experience of the work. I had tried to create paintings that had the same feel as the drawings but they fell short. Then, after months of experimentation, I came up with a process of creating underpaintings of acrylic paint mixed with pumice that I could then draft and draw on. For this I use wax free colored pencils and a final protective coat of clear acrylic to produce a drawing with the durability of a painting. The set shown here includes the new works on canvas plus a few works on paper that I recently reframed with AR glass (glass that has an anti-reflective coating).
