Work from the Patterns in Space series, mostly from the late 80's to mid 1990's

Most are colored pencil on black paper. Those with a Ø symbol below the date are not available.

This type of work is a personal favorite. Drafting with colored pencils, rolling them in my fingers as I pull them across the page, counting out the rhythmic spacing of patterned grids or laying out a pattern of spheres feels like waving a conductors baton and creating one improvisation after the next. The dominant theme is the relationship between rigid patterns (very left brain) and more fluid or organic patterns (more right brain). The proportional division of space is not measured but intuitive. I like a statement attributed to Michelangelo that "proportion should be kept in the eye, not in the hand."
