Title: Rose window

Media: Colored pencil on paper

Size: 20" x 20"

Date: mid 1980s

Comments: The original inspiration for this and several related works were the rose windows of Gothic cathedrals. The subtitle blue and red pattern was taken directly from a pattern at Chartres Cathedral. This was combined with a disk and crescent motif that seemed to me to evoke something primordial, or archetypal. This work was one of the last of my rose window inspired works. I had created a number of them using felt tip markers that had great luminosity but I quickly discovered that the markers fade over time. While this work is in a medium that will not fade, I think my choice of light, faded colors was influenced by what I had seen happen to some of my earlier works.
